GRANDPA

Growing up in Oklahoma as a kid was such a joy.
I remember every word my Grandpa told me as a boy.
He said, “Son, my life is full of dreams, and I know yours is too,
But won’t you take the time to listen to what Grandpa says to you?”

He said, “Never let nobody try to tell you what is right,
Just trust yourself to know the truth by what you feel inside.
The choices that you make in life are yours, and yours alone,
So don’t ever be afraid to stand and make them on your own.”

Grandpa always had the time for me. He tried to understand,
He helped me leave my youth behind and grow into a man.
He could never answer all my questions, but he always tried.
How I wish I could have been there on the day that Grandpa died.

I remember how my Grandpa used to take me for a walk.
We’d go chasing after dreams, but more importantly, we’d talk.
He would listen to each word I said, and then he’d give advice,
And every time that I felt pain I saw the tears in Grandpa’s eyes.

I can still remember all the things we shared when I was young.
Now I have a child of my own and my life has just begun.
Each night I pick my daughter up and place her on my knee,
Then I share with her the precious love that my Grandpa gave me.
