You know she talks about you every day,
So I was not surprised to hear her say,
“Daddy, would you mind if I give Momma a call?â€
I said, “No, darling, you can give her a ring.
No, I don’t need to tell her anything.â€
Then as she started to speak, I felt my teardrops fall.
You know when she said, “Momma, I love you,â€
I almost said that I loved you, too,
But now that you have found someone new
That’s not the right thing to do.
Then she said, “Oh Momma, can’t you see,
That this is not how it’s supposed to be.
I wish that we could be a family,
Just you and Daddy and me.â€
Then she said you wanted me on the phone,
And so I asked her if she’d leave us alone,
And then through your tears I heard you asking me why
I permitted her to make such a call,
That is was over long ago, after all,
Then I had to answer you as I started to cry.
You know when she said, “Momma, I love you,â€
I almost said that I loved you, too,
But now that you have found someone new,
That’s not the right thing to do.
And when she said, “Oh Momma, can’t you see,
That this is not how it’s supposed to be.
I wish that we could be a family.â€
I couldn’t help but agree.
