THE GOLDEN WEDDING BAND

As she and I were dancing for the first time,
I felt her body trembling in my hands.
I couldn’t help but notice on her finger
She wore a little, golden wedding band.

Then as she took her seat, she started crying
And said, “I don’t suppose you’d understand,
But if you’ve got the time I’d like to tell you
About this little, golden wedding band.

We met when he and I were still in high school.
I thought he was the only one for me.
Then as we both grew older we discovered
Our lives were not what we thought they would be.

We tried our best to make each other happy.
Then we agreed to set each other free.
Now I still wear this ring as a reminder
Of all the things that it once meant to me.”

That golden wedding band, she wore upon her hand
Was just a sad reminder of the past.
A lonely symbol of a longing need for love,
The kind of love which hopefully would last.
