Every night when they first went to bed,
There’s always something they’d both do.
He would say, “I hope you sleep well.â€
She’d say, “I hope you sleep well, too.â€
But many miles have come between them
And now they sleep in separate beds.
Yet every night as he lies down to sleep,
A single thought runs through his head.
He says, “I hope you sleep well, darling,
Wherever you may be.
I wish sweet dreams for you, my love.
I hope you wish the same for me.â€
Although he tried to make her happy,
It just seemed she couldn’t be,
And because he loved her very much,
He thought it best to set her free.
And yet each night he still remembers
Those tender words that she once said.
Then just before he starts to dream of her,
He hears those words run through his head.
