THE VOICE NOT YOURS

I hear a voice, a voice not yours.
I hear it say that you’ve gone out,
And I feel my heart sinking.
I need you to be there,
To touch me with your voice.
I want to hear your laughter
So that I might laugh as well.
I love to hear you tell me
That you love me, only me.
When I first called, there was no answer,
So my desire only grew.
More anxious now, I call again,
And then I hear a voice,
A voice not yours.
