CLOSE ENOUGH

Daddy never heard me sing the song I wrote for him.
Daddy never heard me play this here guitar,
And Daddy never saw me on the stage with all these fans.
Maybe I’ll get close enough for him to see when I’m a star.

Daddy, if you’re looking down on me,
I hope I make you proud.
You’re the one who told me I’d go far.
Since I know you’re far away,
I’ll play my music loud.
Maybe I’ll get close enough
For you to see when I’m a star.

I remember Daddy working hard to raise us kids.
He did his best to teach us right from wrong.
He set a fine example with the way he lived,
And I still recall the way he poured his heart into a song.

Daddy always said I’d have to make it on my own,
‘Cause there’d come a time when he wouldn’t be around.
Even though it’s been a while, I can’t believe he’s gone,
And even now I do my best so I won’t let him down.
