HER DADDY NOW

Excuse me, little girl,
Did you know you have a beautiful mommy?
I’ll bet any man would be proud
To call her his wife.
I see that she’s alone.
I guess you still don’t have a daddy.
I understand he left you both
Before you were born.

Yes, I know your daddy well.
He used to be a friend of mine.
What happened to him, I can’t tell.
I guess he must have lost his mind.

Of course, I know you’re right.
You really shouldn’t talk to strangers.
I can see your mommy taught you well.
You should be proud of her.
I’m sure it must be hard
For her to try to find the answers
To help someone like you understand
Why your daddy’s gone.

I suppose you better go.
I’m sure your mommy will be worried.
Won’t you tell her that a friend from the past
Said to tell her hello?
No, I really shouldn’t come.
Run along, you better hurry.
Yes, if I see your daddy, I’ll be sure
To give him your love.

As I watched her walk away
I felt my tears as they were falling.
I wish I could have had the strength
To tell her the truth,
But I’m not sure that she’s prepared
To know that I’m her daddy,
And I’m not sure that I deserve the right
To be part of her life.

Hello, yes it was me.
I’m so glad I finally met her.
Yes, she is such a lovely girl.
She takes after you.
I know I hurt you so,
But I would like to make things better.
I promise you that I’ve really changed.
I’m not the man you once knew.

Although I knew him very well.
He used to be a friend of mine.
I know I put you both through hell,
But I can’t turn back the hands of time.
Yet, if you’d give me one more chance,
I’ll make it up to you somehow.
You see, she really touched my heart,
And I’d like to be her daddy now.
