WISER

She left a note upon the door
To let me know she’d gone.
She said that she could take no more,
And she was going home.
She said she knew that I loved her,
But that just wasn’t enough,
Because it takes a lot more to make it
In life, than just love.

We’d been together for half a year.
We loved each other so.
She said she wanted to wear my ring,
Or else she’d have to go.
I tried to tell her I needed her.
I couldn’t make it alone,
But I was not quite ready to make her
My wife, now she’s gone.

I wish I could have been wiser,
And understood her needs.
If I had only been wiser,
She’d still be here with me.

I couldn’t stay there all alone.
I had to find that girl.
I had to bring her home with me,
Back into my world.
I went and told her I loved her,
And then I gave her a ring.
I told her that I would make her
My wife, with this ring.

I guess I must have grown wiser
And finally realized
That it takes a lot more to make it
In life, than just love.
