A DREAM OF ONE NIGHT

So gladly would I give my life to be
With you for just one night. Though it must end
With morning’s light, I’d still forsake my friends
And family just for the chance to see
You when I wake, just smiling down on me.
By morning’s light, sweet Nature need not lend
It’s beauty to one such as you, nor send
A fragrance sweet as honey to entrance me.
Your love alone would hold me for the night,
And give me cause to wish that it could last.
Yet in the morning, after all has passed,
I’ll still regret to see the morning light.
Once it has come I’ll cry, for life has passed,
And glancing up I’ll see you fade from sight.
