OCCASIONAL GLANCES

I stared across the crowded
Restaurant and watched you
As you sat there eating.
I saw you as you looked up
And noticed me watching you.
You smiled and glanced away,
Resuming your conversation
With the friend you came with.
You would cast occasional glances
My way, and smile each time
You noticed me watching
And smiling back at you.
I rose to leave and thought
Of going over to talk to you,
But instead I turned away.
I could feel your eyes upon me,
But the ring on my hand
Prevented me from turning back,
For one night of love with you
Could never take the place
Of the years of love with her.
