THE EYES OF A STRANGER

I witness his crime and
Watch him flee from the scene.
For no reason, I give chase.
Sheer determination drives me,
For the fear would hold me back.
The policeman sees two men running,
Apparently together, from the crime.
He draws his gun and cries out
His warning before he fires.
I feel the sudden pain and fall
As the sidewalk rises before me.
Hands are reaching for me,
Turning me over and lifting me up.
I look into the eyes of a stranger.
As she holds me in her arms
My life’s blood flows through her fingers,
And I feel her tears of sorrow
As they fall upon my cheek.
